land

The word "land" refers to a place or an area above sea level. If you can stand on it, it’s land.

• This piece of land is almost completely surrounded by water.
• Seventy percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. The rest is land.
• The land in Iowa and Nebraska is good for growing corn.
• Land in the United States is expensive in some places but cheap in other areas.
• The United States is a land of opportunity.
• Travelers who visit foreign lands have experience with a variety of cultures.

You can also use the word "land" as a verb. In this case, it has a couple of different meanings. In these examples, it means to arrive at a place by boat or plane:

• What time does your plane land?
• The boat is landing at the dock.
• Astronauts from our planet have landed on the moon on several different occasions.

A person can also "land." When applied in this way, "land" means to touch the ground after a jump or a fall.

• After jumping from the tree, Joe landed on his feet.
• Rachel landed on her back while she was ice skating, but she’s okay.
• Landing on one’s head can cause a serious or even a fatal injury.

As a verb, "land" also means to catch, to get, or to succeed.

• Jeremy landed a huge fish.
• How did you land your job?
• People trying to land a new job need to work on their resume.
